What does a healthy leveret look like?
A healthy Leveret may:
- Freeze and try to get as low as possible to hide. This is a natural instinct
- Be found alone
- Be alert and responsive to noise
Leverets are commonly found by the public during springtime, however, they can also be found during the winter months.
What to do if you find a leveret?
If you find a baby hare, possibly in your garden, keep well away from the animal and take your pet inside temporarily and keep a safe distance.
Do not move or expose it. If in doubt, contact the USPCA.
Never feed, handle or move a baby hare. They require specialist formula milk, never give cow’s milk.
Baby hares are also highly susceptible to aspiration, so only experienced individuals should feed them.
When a leveret may need some help
- Movement issues, such as limping or a lame leg
- Obvious cuts, wounds or the presence of blood
- Lying on its side while still breathing
- Seizures or twitching
- Brought to a person by a cat or dog
