National Kitten Day is here, a day when we celebrate the love and companionship that our cute, fluffy, playful feline friends offer us. To care for a kitten truly enriches our lives!

The timing of this day is of no coincidence, as we are at the peak of feline breeding season. Each year, kitten season places extraordinary demands on the USPCA team, as we take in and care for litter after litter. Each year, we are experiencing increasing demand and caring for ever more kittens.

This year, we are launching an emergency appeal, requesting your urgent help to meet this challenge.

Caring for litters barely born, even kittens arriving with umbilical cords still attached, our animal care team works day and night to hand-feed every hungry mouth, as well as treating and vaccinating every fragile little life.

Right now, we’re caring for 73 kittens. This brings the tally to 110 kittens admitted since the start of the season. Each new kitten requires to be fed every two hours for the first two weeks of their life. Animal care officers might well care for as many as ten kittens each, at the height of the season.

Every kitten is afforded the highest quality care and undivided attention of our animal care team, because they all deserve the very best start in life!

One of the kittens currently in our care is Romeo. This young tom was found abandoned at the side of a busy road. Suffering from cat flu, and covered in teeming lice, Romeo’s eyes had become badly infected. Distressed from the pain and discomfort of flu, infestation and infection, Romeo was handed into the USPCA by a passerby.

Now secure in our cattery, he has been treated for his ailments and is recovering well from the trauma of his early life it’s likely he will not fully recover his sight and physical scars may remain, but Romeo has been given his second chance in life.

Now, Romeo is almost ready to find his forever home. A home that will support his needs, care for and protect him so that never again will he endure pain. A future filled with love, kindness and comfy snoozes awaits.

You can be there for kittens like Romeo this kitten season.

Unprecedented demand not only places huge burdens on our animal care team, but further stretches the limited resources with which we work. You are a vital part of this kitten season response, and we know you’ll stand with us today as you’ve done before!
