Fox Cubs in USPCA Care
Fox Cubs in USPCA Care
As seen on our social media pages, we currently have four little fox cubs in our care.
They all came to us separately over the course of the past two months, all of them having been found by members of the public who monitored and noticed no mother was present. Without their mother to care for them, these cubs were malnourished and poorly. We dread to think of what could have happened to those poor mother foxes.
When a fox cub comes into our care, one of our main priorities is to avoid imprinting, to ensure this we operate minimal contact with humans to keep them as wild as possible. We keep their environment as natural as they would expect it to be in nature and their diet is kept close to a natural source with carrion offerings and seasonal variations like fruit and nuts.
A care plan will be put in place for these little cubs which will include a 'soft' release when the cubs are ready to fend for themselves out in the wild. Our wildlife team shared that a soft release involves building an enclosure close to the habitat where the cubs will be released so they can acclimatise to the environment and its temperatures, thus ensuring they have the best chance of survival.
We want to ensure these cubs and their familiy's safety in the wild, so if you haven't already signed the petition we are running with League Against Cruel Sports to ban hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland, please do so! These beautiful animals do not deserve the cruelty of being chased, distressed and eventually killed just for sport.
