Badger Cull Petition Comes to a Close
The USPCA petition to stop the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA’s) proposal for a badger cull in Northern Ireland as part of the bovine TB eradication strategy is now closed. Launched in partnership with the Northern Ireland Badger Group and Ulster Wildlife, the petition achieved over 10,000 signatures opposing the cull.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members and supporters for adding their voice to our campaign to help stop the badger cull. It is with your help we have been able to make clear our views and recommendations on how to meaningfully address the issue of bovine TB in Northern Ireland. We would also like to extend our thanks to those who took the time to submit a written response to DAERA’s consultation document. We hope that collectively, our views will be given careful consideration by the Department and will help shape a more humane and proportionate approach to tackling bovine TB. The proposal, as it stands, will see the slaughter of thousands of healthy badgers – this is unjustifiable and morally wrong, discounting the very laws we have in place to protect this native species.
We will continue to share developments on this issue in the coming weeks and months.
